Coronavirus (COVID-19) and depression in adults, Great Britain: July to August 2021

This Office for National Statistics (ONS) analysis provides information on the proportion of the adult population of Great Britain experiencing some form of depression in summer 2021, based on responses to the Opinions and Lifestyle Survey. It includes analysis by age, sex and other characteristics and comparisons with early 2021, 2020 and pre-pandemic estimates.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) and the social impacts on Great Britain: 6 to 17 October 2021

These ONS statistics provide indicators from the Opinions and Lifestyle Survey to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on people, households and communities in Great Britain between 6 and 17 October 2021.

Personal well-being in the UK: April 2020 to March 2021 - UK

This ONS article provides estimates of life satisfaction, feeling that the things done in life are worthwhile, happiness and anxiety at a  UK, country, regional, county and local authority level between April 2020 and March 2021.

Family Court statistics quarterly: April to June 2021 – England and Wales

This quarterly data from the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) provides information on the volume of cases dealt with by family courts in England and Wales over time between April and June 2021, with statistics also broken down for the main types of case involved. 

The disease of disparity: A blueprint to make progress on health inequalities in England

This Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) paper reveals systematic correlation between wealth, poverty, social conditions and health. It also demonstrates that education, skills, welfare and public health services all have a strong link to health outcomes and life expectancy. The report identifies clusters of areas of England where multiple disadvantages are dampening down health outcomes and halting life expectancy development.

Who is lonely in Wales

This series of data insights on loneliness in Wales from the Wales Centre for Public Policy (WCPP) is based on bespoke analysis of the National Survey for Wales (NSW). 

Care homes and estimating the self-funding population, England: 2019 to 2020

On Friday 15th October, ONS published an estimation of the size of the self-funding population in care homes in England, using a new experimental method. This beta release provides data covering August 2019 to February 2020, which have been weighted up to create a pre-coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic annual estimate.

Four nations matrix for adult social care statistics

ONS have recently produced a four nations matrix of adult social care statistics which is published as a downloadable spreadsheet on the adult social care landscape. This tool has been designed to help improve the accessibility of statistics of adult social care and highlight areas that may or may not be comparable between the devolved nations.

These Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) experimental statistics provide information on a range of topics including infection control measures, coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccinations and testing for COVID-19 in adult social care settings in England as at 28 September 2021. 

Adult inpatient survey: 2020 - England

This DHSC publication provides statistics on people's experiences of NHS adult inpatient services in England in November 2020.

Assessing the impact of COVID-19 on clinically extremely vulnerable people

This analysis from The Health Foundation shows the scale of the challenge of ensuring that the most clinically vulnerable to COVID-19 are kept safe, and in providing high-quality health and social care during the pandemic.

Rapid evidence review on rail investment

This rapid evidence review from the What Works Centre for Local Economic Growth  offers recommendations to policymakers based on 29 studies that examined the impacts of rail investment on local economic outcomes such as employment, business performance and property prices.

Attitudes towards COVID-19 among passengers travelling into and out of the UK: March 2021 to August 2021

These ONS traveller statistics provide monthly figures on the attitudes of UK and overseas residents arriving and departing the UK, towards social distancing, mask wearing, and COVID-19 restrictions and the proportion who had been vaccinated, using unweighted results from the International Passenger Survey for the period covering March to August 2021 and the Civil Aviation Authority’s Departing Passengers Survey for the period covering June to August 2021 (experimental statistics).


Transport and environment statistics: Autumn 2021 - UK

These DfT transport and environment statistics provide information on a range of topics including greenhouse gases and pollutants emitted by transport. They Include experimental statistics comparing the environmental impact of various journeys in the UK by different modes of transport and carbon emissions from transport by local authority area.

Statistical Digest of Rural England

This Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) compendium publication, is a collection of rural statistics on a wide range of social and economic government policy areas.

The people and nature survey for England: Monthly indicators for August 2021 (Official Statistics) 

These statistics from Natural England provide indicators from the People and Nature Survey covering the month of August 2021 to understand how people use the natural environment in England and the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19).

Local government

Public Sector Audit Appointments (PSAA) quality of audit service feedback survey

PSAA monitors the performance of the auditors it has appointed to undertake audits under the Local Audit and Accountability Act 2014. PSAA commissioned the LGA Research and Information team to conduct two anonymous surveys seeking the views and experiences of directors of finance and Audit committee chairs, respectively, in relation to audits for the 2019/20 financial year and taking place during 2020/21.

LG Inform updates

New LG Inform report on understanding homelessness in your area

This new LG Inform report uses latest data to present an overview of homelessness in an area by looking at the economic context, the level of housing need, and service users' journeys, for both priority and non-priority applicants, including their outcomes.

This report will help councils to understand the drivers of homelessness within their local area, assess the efficacy of services in preventing homelessness and enable the identification of interventions which could help improve the support provided.

Fly-tipping is on the increase - what's the situation in your area?

Fly-tipping has long been a major issue for many local communities and costs local taxpayers almost £50 million a year to clear up. The LG Inform report on fly-tipping has been updated for 2019/20 data and shows important statistics for local areas at a glance including: incidents, costs, fines and prosecutions.

LG Inform Benchmarking Clubs are open again

The benchmarking clubs, suspended last year due to the pandemic, are now open again. The LGA Workforce and Corporate clubs both have collection windows for new data submissions.

The LGA Workforce Benchmarking Club collection window for 2020/21 and 2021/22 Quarter 2 data is now open. The deadline for entering data is Wednesday 17 November.

Young people not in education, employment or training (NEET) and participation

These ONS statistics provide information on the characteristics of the furloughed population and their movements in the labour market using Labour Force Survey data as at October 2021.

These Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) official experimental statistics provide information on the number of people claiming unemployment related benefits and estimates of the proportion in-work in the UK.

Rural economic bulletin - England

The Defra quarterly rural economic bulletin  is now available and is a 'dashboard' of indicators designed to provide evidence on the rural economy.

This ONS early experimental data and analysis provides information on economic activity and social change in the UK. These real time indicators are created using rapid response surveys, novel data sources, and experimental methods.

Forecasts for the UK economy: October 2021

This HM Treasury publication provides a comparison of independent forecasts for the UK economy in October 2021.


Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) Analysis - England

This analysis from JRF highlights that almost one million families on low incomes in England (956,000) are paying rents in the private rented sector that are not affordable.


Legal aid statistics quarterly: April to June 2021 - England and Wales

These MoJ legal aid statistics provide information on activity in the legal aid system for England and Wales, including criminal and civil legal aid and family mediation between April and June 2021.

Criminal court statistics quarterly: April to June 2021 – England and Wales

These MoJ criminal court statistics provide information on the type and volume of cases received and processed through the criminal court system of England and Wales, between April and June 2021. These include statistics on case timeliness and on the use of language interpreter and translation services in courts and tribunals.

Hate crime, England and Wales: Year ending March 2021

These Home Office hate crime statistics provide information on hate crimes recorded by the police in England and Wales for the year ending March 2021.

Inspired by the HAPPI design principles, the Technology for our Ageing Population: Panel for Innovation (TAPPI) launched its Inquiry findings and recommendations in late October.

Take the next step in developing your career with the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR)

NIHR is providing opportunities for individuals working in local authority settings to undertake short placements/taster opportunities to develop skills and research collaborations. The placements include funding of up to £15,000 per individual and offer the chance to experience research within an NIHR setting such as an NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC). NIHR Population Health Career Scientist Award (PHCSA)
NIHR are accepting applications to their PHCSA. They wish to develop and enhance research expertise in the most important areas affecting population health, by supporting the next generation of independent public health research leaders.

The PHCSA is a UK-wide initiative to enable senior researchers to make the next step to Reader/Professor level in their host institutions. There is a desire to attract applicants representing the wide range of disciplines which undertake research in areas which impact the determinants of health (e.g. environmental science, mathematics, architecture, engineering, geography, education, social sciences, social policy, arts).

Local Authority Short Placement Award for Research Collaboration (SPARC) Competition
NIHR has launched the SPARC competition which allows eligible individuals to move between NIHR and local authority settings in either direction for short placements. More information is available here.
